Queen Beyonce Giselle Knowles Carter released her much anticipated visual album, “Black is King”, which brings to life the songs from her album “The Gift“. The project debuted on Disney Plus and features ornate costuming, a celebration of African kings and queens and pure opulance.
In keeping with my tradition of honoring this great performer and the wonderful African actors, dancers, creators and recording artists she collaborated with and invited to join in this endeavor, I am showcasing some of the best visuals.
A lot of them feature magnificent, gorgeously coiffed hair.
Celebrities featured included: Lupita Nyong’o, Kelly Rowland, Naomi Campbell, Adut Akech and Aweng Chuol and of course her family, Jay Z, Tina Knowles Lawson, Sir, Rumi and Blue Ivy Carter. Featured artists include: Lord Afrixana, Yemi Alade, Jessie Reyez, Shatta Wale, Salatiel, Pharrell Williams, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Mr Eazi, Ninja, Tierra Whack, Busiswa, and Moonchild Sanelly.
Per Teen Vogue:
The reimagined story of The Lion King weaves its way through the musical segments of the film and the cast portraying the characters we know so well are truly ones to watch, hailing from South Africa and Nigeria. Folajomi Akinmurele plays young Simba, with Nyaniso Ntsikelelo Dzedze playing grown Simba. Connie Chiume portrays Sarabi, Simba’s mother, with Warren Masemola playing Scar. The illustrious Nandi Madida plays Nala, the late Mary Twala as Rafiki and finally rising actor Stephen Ojo playing an abstract character — the Blue Man.
Because this is a hair blog after all, I had to share these stills I nabbed from the publicly published videos on YouTube. As she shares other videos, I’ll share more. Enjoy!
