Miss Jamaica Made History as 1st Contestant with Locs to Make it to Miss World Top 5

While everyone was focused on Steve Harvey reading the wrong Miss Universe 2015 winner, a 24-year old Jamaican doctor was making history as the first international beauty pageant contestant wearing locks to make it to the Top 5!

Sanneta Myrie beat out 99 other contestants at the contest which took place in Sanya, China on Saturday, December 19.

The brain with beauty has said she is all about Roots and Culture!

“I lock my hair because I identify with it,” Myrie told BET after her win. “I am very much rooted in that Afro-centric nature, where we as Jamaicans are rooted. It’s my expression. The only thing to eclipse the natural beauty of Jamaica is the spirit of its people… one of strong resilience, creativity, and ingenuity.”

She wasn’t the first to wear locs at an international pageant, however.

Zahra Redwood sported the loc look during Miss Universe in 2007 and she too broke barriers as the first Rastafarian to compete for the title.

And Jamaica is always coming through with the out-of-the box beauties.

Last year, Jamaica’s Kaci Fennell stood out at the Miss Universe 2014 competition in short cropped hair given most beauty pageant contestants sport long flowy hair.

After Miss Colombia Paulina Vega beat out Miss USA Nina Sanchez in that contest, many people were upset because they thought Fennell got robbed with 5th place only because she wore super short hair.

This all comes full circle, doesn’t it? Vega was the one who had to remove the crown from wrongly announced Miss Colombia 2015 Ariadna Gutierre this week at the Miss Universe 2015 competition.

And how about all the Asians cleaning up, huh?! Not only did Miss Philippines win Miss Universe, but Miss World 2015’s Second Runner up was Maria Harfanti from Indonesia. And Miss America 2014 Nina Davulur is an Indo-American.

Interesting stuff! huh!? (smile)
