DC Teen is A Google Doodle Contest Finalist with Her Box Braid Entry!

Google
is having a doodle contest with school-aged student entrants and I noticed a braids-related/themed entry!

Through February 22, when you go to Google.com, you will notice a link right below the search bar that will take you to a contest page featuring artwork from 53 young people from Kindergarten to 12th grade.

“Young artists coast to coast entered Doodle 4 Google: Which masterpiece should win?” the statement reads.

These are the winners from the State and US Territories. Each won an Android tablet and their doodle on a T-Shirt.

Google wants users of its search engine (which is everyone on Earth) to help it select the top 5 finalists. You can vote for one entry from each grade category: K-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-12.

And one overall winner from among the top five will have his or her artwork featured on the Google homepage! Very neat! Talk about Bragging Rights for life!
Oh and they get a $30,000 college scholarship, a $50,000 Google for Education grant for his or her school, a trip to the Google Headquarters in California to meet the Google Doodlers, and the opportunity to nominate a teacher to come on the trip and A Chromebook ( along with the Android tablet and T shirt all the semi-finalists got)

The other four National Finalists who do not become the National Winner will have their doodles featured in the Doodle 4 Google gallery. Each National Finalist will receive: A $5,000 college scholarship; A trip to the Google Headquarters in California to meet the Google Doodlers ( and the tablet and t-shirt)

I’ve voted for the entries that speak to me and when I got to the 12th grade category, I was blown away by Akilah Johnson‘s “Afrocentric” entry where she spells out the words “Google” in a box braid!

And Johnson is local to me! She is a senior at Eastern High School in Washington, DC!

“My Afrocentric Google is drawn as a box braid with my personal characteristics surrounding it,” Johnson writes in her entry. “I based this picture off my lifestyle and what has made me into what I am today.”
